Below is a interview with indie filmmaker and professional artist Alexia Anastasio.

1. Alexia can you please give a brief explanation about Ginger Girls: The Secret Lives Of Redheads and why you decided to create this film.

Ginger Girls is a documentary project about girls with natural red hair. I am interviewing girls for the documentary, photographing them for a book and working with them on various collaborative levels. Tonight we are having a fashion show in NYC.

I decided to make this film because it is more personal to me and I wanted to work with other talented, successful redheads and empower the term, Ginger Girl.

2. If you weren’t a redhead yourself would you have still have made this film?

Maybe not, but I have heard of other photographers that have been interested in Gingers who were not ginger themselves.

3. What is one myth that you proved a falsehood?

That Gingers are firecrackers. They are all different. I believe there are many stereotypes about redheads that are false and I hope to show that in the film.

4. Do you mention any fictional redheads in Ginger Girls?

Yes, we do mention some fictional characters like Pippi Longstocking!

5. Where will the film be shown and on what dates?

We plan to finish the film at the end of 2012 and be playing festivals in 2013.

6. Finally, is this film going to be available in any digital form after the film festivals?

Yes, that will be up to the distributor, but many films are now going from festivals to theatrical, tv, online and more. I am filming Ginger updates so people don't have to wait until the whole movie is done and we are doing events in NYC.

An interesting thing about religion as a concept is that anyone can believe in anything, from a worm to my forehead to nothing at all. Yet still we bicker and fight like children as if anyone has more knowledge, proof and/or rights than the next person. I mean we could have more peaceful and stable global cultures if we stopped constantly pissing on each other's lawns regarding which organized (and unorganized) belief system is right. I for one refuse to play this tired game.

Newsarama.com recently reported that George Perez will leave Superman after issue 6. The new creative team is Keith Giffen & Dan Jurgens. This makes at least three changes to creative teams for the DC New 52. Possibly more could follow at the rate this is happening, but this is just a guess.

Jumping ship on a job or The DC 52 Drop

J.T. Krul and some others are dropping their new DC titles for various reasons. Now while I won't talk about the titles or creators specifically, I will say that it is never a good idea to drop a job just after a short time. While no job is ever easy, I believe that in this economy one should stick with guaranteed work for long enough, at least, that a positive reference is acquired.

Now as for the New DC, this kind of sudden leaving could strike a blow against the positive marketing and mindset that they are trying to create. For example newer, or returning readers could be turned off by the writing team replacing Krul on Green Arrow. Of course the opposite could prove just as true. We will know within the next several months which titles will succeed and which floundered.

My Dad's Opinion About The New Men Of War # 1

A bit of background about my dad: He grew up reading Sgt. Rock comics among others such as Thor. He stopped reading comics quite awhile before I was born. Now I recently gave my dad Men of War # 1 as an experiment to see what his opinions were of Sgt. Frank Rock's grandson Joe. My dad felt the Joe Rock story should have had flashback references to the original Sgt. Rock. His opinion was that it felt like a one-off type comic.

Before Joe Rock ever saw ink to page as a character, my dad and I had talked about pitching a grandson to Sgt. Rock to DC at some point. The title, as thought out by my dad and I, would have explored the Rock's family tree and the current wars in the Middle East.

Tears from a Who Episode

I almost cried due to the latest doctor who episode "The Girl Who Waited", because of the ending. I also found myself wondering after watching this episode if the doctor's Past or Future actions/lies are the reasons for the War? The War being with the baddies who stole and brainwashed/programmed Melody Pond. Again this is just my thoughts and theories on Doctor Who Season 6.

Omega Symbol Pop

Doctor Who keeps having the omega symbol pop-up. The Omega Symbol appeared on the clerics uniforms in the two part episode The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone in season/series 5. It also appeared, on Melody Pond's little baby hospital plastic bed thing, in The Season/Series 6 Part 1 episode A Good Man Goes To War. My theory is that Omega, a former Doctor Who villain, is behind the events of these past seasons.

As for the last episode, I think the little people operating the robot are Time Agents.

These are just theories though.

The creator of Spawn Todd McFarlane recently talked to comicbookresources.com about digital prices. The basics are that since some of the production costs are not part of the digital equation, then comics should cost less. This is a very true statement. I for one think more people would flock to digital media of all sorts if prices were more realistic.

ABC and Gas Prices

You know the economy is screwed up still when shows like All My Children are cancelled without fanfare. I mean ABC/Disney not trying to figure out some way to save soap operas, and gas prices being blown up, the economy is still messed up. Of course partly I think the current heads of ABC programming are either crazy, or on drugs, due to giving the axe to two forty year something soap operas. Staples of American pop culture such as One Life to Live and All My Children have endured longer than these programmers have probably held their current jobs.

Gas Prices on the other hand should not be jumping as fast as they have been. I mean please, oil companies & warmongers are just trying to capitalize on the global and social problems we face. We need to peacefully protest this treatment of our wallets and livelihoods. This is especially true because the average person can't afford the pain that comes from the pump. We also need cleaner energy sources so another oil spill or nuclear meltdown won't happen. Once we have cleaner energy we can phase out the old "dirty" energy.

I recently voted on a poll on comicbookresources.com that has the Fantastic Four Lee/Kirby issues vs. the Spider-Man Lee/Ditko issues.

This was the reasoning I posted on their site after voting:

I have to say based on the origins, among other reasons, I had to vote for Fantastic Four. I mean Spider-Man was okay back then, but If you dissect his origin it's not good. I mean no safeguards are in place for the experiment that radiated the spider. No scientist has concern about Parker's safety, let alone their own. The Fantastic Four at least thought about consequences to radiation exposure.

Barry Allen's Cast of Characters

Upon rereading the first appearance of Colonel Computron, I noticed that Barry Allen had more friends then have been shown. What I mean is what happened to Mack & Troy Nathan from the Cary Bates era. Barry has met so many people in terms of his neighbors that this could be what truly separates him from Wally West. I mean think about it, Wally has mainly super buddies, while Barry had regular and super. I personally would like to see more of Barry Allen's old cast members and Flashpoint or afterwards might be the time to reintroduce them. I also wouldn't mind seeing the Tornado Twins, John Fox, Cobalt Blue and the rest of the Flash/Thawne legacy again. Heaps of food for thought.

Green Lantern Trailer

I recently read the comments on one of the copies of the official GL trailer. What I read was stupid because people were judging the CGI in a negative way. Come on, the costume in the comics is made of light. Another thing is Hal Jordan in comics has never been the best with money, so how would he be able to afford replacement costumes. Commenters also said that this movie was racist, mostly because they probably only know John Stewart A.K.A. Green Lantern from Justice League and Unlimited. People should at least do a wiki or web search before commenting in a negative and unintelligent manner.

I am guilty of this kind of commenting on occasion as well only I do it in private conversations.

Three Somewhat Random Things

First a channel called HUB has late night showings of the 1960s Batman television show. Beyond cool since it is not available on DVD or Blu-Ray.

Second the Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes is the first cartoon from Marvel that has quality to it. This is my personal opinion. (Really hoping that they don't get rid of the Hulk from the roster.)

Bruce Willis is great in RED but Richard Dreyfuss is weak. Richard Dreyfuss just can't play sinister. The movie as a whole is great and well worth seeing. James Remar is a pleasant surpise in the movie.

The Turner Question

I got to ask Kathleen Turner a question during an award ceremony at the Hi-Pointe. The question involved high jinks on the set of The War Of The Roses. Kathleen Turner replied with information such as Danny DeVito giving her a tray that had the word Woof on it. The car that Kathleen drove for the "monster truck" portion of the movie had the hydraulics breakdown, and for six hours she was stuck in that car. Ms. Turner is a class act in my opinion.

Marvel Update Change

I was going to talk about Marvel's reaction to DC's price decrease, but bigger news happened. Disney bought back distribution rights for the Marvel films Paramount had. I guess this means we might see more Disney related movie trailers and the disney logo before these specific movies. Time will always tell.

I was reading the above article and I have to agree with the comments. Anyone who thinks that Spider-Man's recent and relatively recent story arcs are good is insane. I mean the Spider-Man & Mary Jane relationship is something that got screwed over by Joe Quesada and Joe keeps tightening the screws. 1. Do you ever feel that your imagination runs wild to the point you want to act out the scene to an extent?

Mmm. Not really. Unless you count playing paintball once a year... ; ) I did learn how to fence in preparation for the few pages in Super Spy the reference fencing - it was great - I ended up watching a ton of pirate movies after that with sword fighting in them. Still not sure that's out of my system.

2. Is there anything you can say about your next upcoming book?

It's called "The Strange Crimes of Red Wheelbarrow" - similar structure to Super Spy but not quite as sprawling - set in the 1960s and it's basically my take on the crime genre - but I'm trying to focus on the less obvious crimes - no heists and no murders (well, hardly any of that)...

3. What is one television show that has continued to influence your work?

The Wire - it's changed how I think about serialized stories and how I think about the world - it's that good.

4. How much, on a scale of one to ten with ten being greatly, has your art style evolved?

10 - no one will ever see my early mini-comics - unless you bought them back in the early 90s - it's crazy how different (bad) they were.

5. Which legendary comic creator would you like to be compared with in terms of writing?

Well, hopefully none - I'd rather just be something like Joseph Heller of comics. ; )

Man Disney once had some variety

I believe one of Disney's failings is the lack of variety in the programming department. One reason I believe this is because Disney's roots are based in cartoons, but they lack them in the evenings. I believe disney could make two great strides in reclaiming the animation field by producing more cartoons for the evenings, and making affordable cartoons in america while maintaining their overseas holdings.

1. What is your worst memory related to a comic convention?

My arms covered with poison ivy for a 3-day con -- and wearing a sport coat over it so I wouldn't completely gross-out everyone that came up to my table -- it was hot and arms were crusty from puss. Horrible.
2. Best memory related to a comic convention?

My first San Diego Comic Con back in 2000 and signing/selling my first book.

3. How many comics did you create before working for Vertigo?

Probably 1,500 pages worth -- 6 graphic novels and a bunch of mini comics. And three new graphic novels due next year post-Vertigo.

4. If you could write any pre-established character from any medium, who would you chose and why?

Any of Jack Kirby's 4th World characters -- because they are all so crazy and there is so much untapped potential and ideas he wasn't allowed to get to. I have a specific storyline/character but I'm saving that in case I actually get to do it.

5. If you were a game either Chess or Checkers which would you be and why?

Chess -- it's the ultimate party game.

Expendables 1 and Many Critics 0

Any critic can be wrong, because a criticism is just an opinion. No matter how well informed an opinion is it's not a fact. The Expendables was billed as an action movie from the start. The thing is this movie has some depth in Mickey Rourke's monologue. Mild romance between Charisma Carpenter and Jason Statham, which is believable in it's minimalism. The only weak part is some of the resolution for the Gunnar character played by Dolph Lundgren. Now is it incredibly deep and have a message, no, but it does what it was set out to do. It is the best action film many of these stars and actors have been in years. In conclusion most critics are in love with art house films, while some just want to be entertained.

Jonah Hex Mini Review

Jonah Hex is not the greatest movie ever made, but it is far from the worst comic based movie (Watchmen, Catwoman, and The Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy come to mind). Josh Brolin and the rest of the cast are good with the script they are given, except Wes Bentley who is lackluster in his acting. While the film is not a classic, it does have a chance to become a cult classic in the DVD department.

I think I might not ever work for Marvel for two reasons. One reason is because how Marvel is treating characters like Loki, Spider-Man, Thunderbolt Ross, and so many others. I just can't respect a company that doesn't respect their assets. The second reason is this Heroic Age nonsense which I find to be negating the heroes past heroics. I mean yes the stories are still there but Marvel just cannibalizes the past and exploits the flaws in heroes like Iron Man too much. They are narrowly focused on the movies, and not enough on the comics which could help provide new stories for new movies.

Batman The Bold Mistake?

I am slightly peeved that Warner Bros. screwed with the U.S. episode order of batman the brave and the bold. This recently caused me to miss the Power of Shazam episode, which I can't even find on youtube. Though it is slightly my fault for missing the episode due to having the recording canceled on my DVR. The reason though was because I reasonably thought that Warner was not going to show new episodes till sometime in March. I hope Warner Bros. puts the episodes in order for the complete seasons dvds.

Erik Larsen has a great idea about how to save the industry that if at first implemented by the Big Two, DC and Marvel, could work. The problem is getting the head honchos to notice and implement this idea. I suggest that anyone and everyone who cares about comics should send DC and Marvel letters, e-mails, blog and vlog about it, go to cons and get people talking, bring it up in interviews even. Heck it might even help the economy. Together we just might make it work. One final thing is some of the spare money we comic fans could save could be used to help Haiti.

DC Publisher Speculation

This Newsarama link showcases what I think is ill-conceived speculation about possible candidates for the position of publisher of DC Entertainment. The only four choices that make sense are: A) Someone not on the list, B) Dan Didio, C) Avi Arad, or D) Bruce Timm. I believe that choices A and C have the same chance of happening, make of this what you will. Bruce Timm would be an interesting choice because he seems to understand the creative side of comics and other media as well as the business side. Timm also is a well known media figure so if he is given the position and agrees to it, it may draw attention to DC Entertainment from certain news sources. Dan Didio may get the job, but then again he may not, personally I would prefer Didio remaining editor-in-chief. I am in a wait and see mode, because guessing anything correctly right now is about as likely as being named editor-in-chief of every comic company at the same time.
