Dept. H Issue 1 Review With Spoilers

Warning Of Spoilers!

Most of the covers are intriguing visuals that suggest a good story, but the outlined body variant has the lead character looking a little too alien. As for the interiors I feel they are mostly great work except for two areas. Area one is actually the first interior page where we get an examination of the deep-sea suit. The problems here are located in the safety deployment feature looking too blobby in the face and the helmet off panel looking a little flat. However, this is still a mostly good page. When the unhinged suspect/scientist Jerome is first seen he is wearing a lab coat and immediately thereafter is not. No explanation is given for this, and it should have been caught by the editor.

Overall I think that this could be up there with Mind Management if enough people give it a chance. Though I will warn that the dialogue felt a bit stilted in certain places. Finally the first issue's letters page, while lacking letters, suggests that like Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips's collaborations this too will have single issue exclusive bonuses. So I recommend this issue and suggest that those interested in the series continuing to the planned conclusion add it to their pull lists/subscriptions.
